Re: Right to buy.
But it would be unfair on people to be moved now that have lived most of their whole lives in the same place.

The rules have changed now to stop it happening and of course if they are not paying their rent they are getting the old bedroom tax now.

We all pay for plenty of stuff we don't use or need Worm, those are the simple facts of life.

Council housing should be available to all

Re: Right to buy.
Because there are people needing a 3 bed place more than he does.

I'm not against a safety net. Subsidised housing should be available but only for a certain period of time. 6 months to | year should be plenty of time for somebody to get back on their feet.

It shouldn't be provided for life, nor should the people living in these subsidised properties (subsidised by me) be given them at a fraction of the true worth.

Re: Right to buy.
I agree. If people dont need 3 bed propeties why should they keep them?

my old boss is the same. kids have moved out so they have a 3 bed gaff in london for £300 per mth.

Croe

Because it's not his house. It's social housing for those in need and they'll be a family of 5 or 6 desperate for a 3 bed on a waiting list or being out up in some shithole b&b.

In some authorities they have an under occupancy scheme where people are paid hundreds or more to move out of properties they have excess space in. Crazy.

Why should he be made to move IF he's paying his rent?

Re: Right to buy.
There was a bloke used to drink in my local.
Many years ago he and his then wife were handed a 3 bed house by the council.

He's been living there alone for the last 12 years. I asked him why the council haven't moved him he just said 'they cant if i dont agree to it, why would i do that?'

He should be fucking evicted if he wont move voluntarily.

Well it hasn't happend in the 40 years since Right to Buy was introduced so it won't.
This going actively discourage HAs to invest in new properties too.

Re: Right to buy.
The right to buy obviously has it's rights and wrongs

Years ago, a good friend of the family, who had 5 kids (all boys?) got a council house in a nice part of London... they needed the help then, kids now all grown up, moved out, Mother all alone in a 3 bedroom house? & her kids help her pay for thr extra charge on bedrooms.
Surely she should be rehoused (small flat) as there are more needy people out there....the argument its her "home" is bollocks, as really it wasn't hers in first place.
I found out one of the sons is buying it now, i think its wrong, i think the profits (when sold) should go back to local authorities, obviously the owner keeps what her paid plus % of Market increase, he's getting it 47k it will be worth 400k in 5 years, he got the hump when i told him my opinion?
don't fucking tell me then!

Re: Right to buy.
Right to buy is fine IF they follow through with their promise to replace every house sold & build 200,000 starter homes.

House prices now make it almost impossible for the large majority to buy a house, if you can afford to then good for you but this helps people get on the house ownership ladder.

As long as I'm not forced to sell my properties to my tenants I think its a great idea. Well done whoever back in the early seventies thought this up.

Re: Right to buy.
Right to Buy is a plan to increase house prices.
It may benefit a few affluent people, but the majority cannot afford mortgages.
We have become very greedy in this country with our fixation on house prices.
The word investment and property should not appear together. Homes are for living in, not for making money out of. Who wants to pay more for their house!

No.
Only the ones who contribute very little but have had an extraordinary gift made to them.

Back in the day nearly all WHU spectators were renters from councils or private landlords.

Were our ancestors all poncing scum?

Re: Right to buy.
this conservative idea to extend right to buy to housing associations is fucking terrible.

theyre the only ones who have been building houses since original right to buy made council stop doing because they were losing too much money when people exercised their right to buy.

would lead to a further slump in housebuilding and another massive rise in house prices, especially in London.

Re: Right to buy.
You're not doing yourselves any favours. I'm pretty sure there's a lot of posters on WHO that have family members who live or have lived in council housing who would not consider them ponces. Only one part of my family has ever lived in state funded housing, my maternal grandparents.

Not that it matters but the council house I bought had been occupied by my grandparents for 55 years after my grandfather returned from fighting in WW2 injured and unable to work.

If that makes them ponces in your mind then you have a serious problem.

Carry on.

Desperate grab at the poor vote and a ridiculous move that will have far reaching and long term ramifications. Terrible, terrible decision

Have only ever voted Labour once, and that was more to remove an awful local MP in 1997, but am swinging towards that now

Re: Right to buy.
I know two people who bought their mother's council house [ she was a widow by then ] and have made a handsome profit especially as the area became "gentrified" over the years.

There is only a political case for selling off council stock to renters. There is certainly not a societal or economic case.

Re: Right to buy.
people who live in council housing, and dont need the spare rooms, should be MADE to downgrade.
